God gives the entire land of Israel to the people, yet the people stop when life gets easy. They allow idols and other cultures to live in their midst. At Bokim, they break the covenant, turn away from God and do whatever is ‘right in their own eyes.’ Today we begin by taking a look at the overarching themes of Judges and learning how to stay true when everything seems ‘to good to be true.’

When the people disobey, God raises up Judges to rescue the people. These judges are ordinary followers, just like us. Today we learn how to use whatever we’ve been given to follow wherever God is calling us – even to the bathroom.

After the death of Joshua, Israel’s fourth leader was the prophet Deborah. She proclaimed the rescue of Israel and Jael provided the release from the enemy King. God uses two women and a small tent peg to deliver the entire nation.

Doubt – human inclination to question, especially God. Gideon teaches us that God can use us even when we doubt and ask for signs. Gideon learns from the fleece on the threshing floor to follow God’s lead.

There are times when it seems like we’ve got everything under control and that we can take on the world.  The truth is, God is the only one in control.  When we feel like we have the world by the tail we quickly discover that that beast can turn on us.  It’s important to live life with God at the steering wheel instead of the co-pilot.  Sampson learned that taking things into his own hands can cause a world of trouble but following God can turn things around.
